We may be exaggerating a bit but Michael Levine is pretty inspiring. Established in the 1940s, they've been supplying designers, crafters and DIYers with fabrics, trims, beading, yarn, buttons, ribbon, sewing tools and everything fabric and notion related for almost 70 years. Michael Levine is actually made up of three stores: one carries fabrics and notions, across the street is their upholstery & drapery store, and above that is "The Loft" where you can buy leftover and overstock fabric by the pound. They carry fabrics ranging from the super affordable to the pricier high end and designer stuff. This is one of few places in the district where you can reorder fabrics, ideal for those manufacturing in larger quantities or looking to maintain consistency season to season.
Don't be fooled by our little photo. This place is huge, but perhaps more importantly, everything is extremely well organized. Each fabric type has it's own section making it incredibly easy to shop the store. You'll find separate sections for prints, silks, jersey, fleece, sequins, lace, etc. including a massive section of yarn and a completely separate supplies department in the back. It's a one-stop-shop!
A small selection of the available buttons and appliques. They also carry feathers, masks, hats and all sorts of fun accessories. |
The ever popular Ikat fabrics. We love the print selection! |
The giant wall of silks. It actually keeps going in the other direction. |
Just in time for the Halloween season, you'll find themed cotton prints, monster perfect faux furs, masks and accessories for all your DIY Halloween costume ideas. This Saturday, October 20, they'll be hosting an in-store Halloween costume DIY event, where costume-clad workers will help you put your best Halloween costume together.
