Hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day weekend! Now that Mom got her flowers, here are some important tips on how to keep those flowers healthy and blooming!
- Use plain, lukewarm water for most cut flowers, but use cold water for bulb flowers (daffodils, hyacinths and tulips)
- Keep flowers out of direct sunlight
- Move them to a cool place at night
- Change the water every 2 days
- Make a fresh cut each time you change the water
- Give daffodils their own vase - daffodil stems give off a compound that is toxic to other flowers
- Keep cut flowers away from fruit. Some fruits release a certain gas that causes flowers to age faster.
Here are some tips on selecting your Mother's Day flowers:
- Flower stems should be green and smooth, not slimy
- Water should smell fresh
- No broken stems or drooping buds
- Keep cut flowers cool until you can get them into water
- Make a fresh cut an inch or two up the stem.
- Cut with a sharp, non-serrated knife
- Always make a cut on a slant, as it exposes more stem surface area
- Make sure the vase and cuttiing tools are clean
- Remove any leaves that will be below the water surface as leaves mold in water
- Use the packet of flower food that come with your flowers.
- Other alternatives to plant food are to add a penny in the vase or an aspirin tablet
