Fun Flower Facts: It's believed Poinsettias first became associated with Christmas in the 17th century, when Franciscan missionaries settled in an area of Southern Mexico where Poinsettias grew. According to one legend, the Poinsettia acquired its bright red color while being used in a nativity procession, becoming "la flor de Nochebuena" or Holy Night (Christmas Eve) flower. In reality, Poinsettias have always been red. They were first cultivated by the Aztecs as a gift from the gods. The color red symbolized blood and the sacrifice the gods had made to create the universe. Very different meanings, no?

Flower Mall vendors have begun taking orders for custom Día de la Virgen "arcos" and altar arrangements. The California Flower Mall, as well as many other merchants in the Flower District, will have extended hours on December 11 and 12 to accommodate shoppers for the Catholic holiday.
